George Dewey Scales, son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Sylvester Scales, was born in Beaumont, Texas on February
24, 1901. At an early age he united with West Tabernacle
Baptist Church. Upon graduation from high school, he entered Wiley
College. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, from which he was
honorably discharged on November 26, 1918.
In 1926, he came to Palestine where he
united with Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. He joined the
Missouri Pacific Railway work force, remaining with the company
until he entered the U.S. Army for a second tour of duty on November
6, 1942. He was honorably discharged May 21, 1945 , returned
to Palestine and resumed employment with Missouri Pacific, retiring
as a carman on July 1, 1967. At the same time, he resumed his
fraternal, civic, and church affiliations. Fraternally, he was
Post Commander of American Woodmen Camp No. 66, a member of Dean
Lodge No. 90 and W.R. Roberts Consistory No. 279, F&AM, and Worth
Patron of Naomi Chapter No. 50, Order of Easter Star. At
Pilgrim Rest he was finance officer, Trustee, teacher of the men's
class in Sunday School, and chairman of the deacon board, and
through the years had served in other capacities.
He was trustee and treasurer of the
Palestine Bowen Association and chairman of the program committee of
the Palestine Ministers and Laymen's Association and always gave his
best. In
1969, he was honored by the Palestine Negro B&PW Club as Man of the
Year in fraternalism.
On September 27, he entered Memorial
Hospital, where he passed away on Friday, October 24, at 9:35 a.m.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Verniece
McCoy Scales; a first cousin, Dennie Washington of Detroit,
Michigan; a step-brother, Peter Scales of Freeport, New York; a
nieces, Mrs. Jerry Ann Gradford of Ceres, California; a nephew, Joe
Robert Scales of Modesto, California and other relatives and
friends. |
